Wednesday June 01, 2005 It turns out I did make the dean's list. I thought making the dean's list meant making all As and Bs, and since I got a C, I naturally thought I had missed it. But it isn't that simple. To make the dean's list, you just have to have a GPA between 3.25 and 3.8. And as I said in my last journal entry, my GPA for the semester was a 3.4. That's dean's list territory. How did I find out? They put my name in the fucking newspaper. I know, I couldn't believe it either. I thought it was against the law to give one's college grades to anyone but the student they belong to. I guess they found themselves a nice little loophole. Posting names as making the dean's list isn't technically releasing their actual grades. Problem is, it's just about as bad. Since they print that stuff in the newspaper (I'm from a small town that has nothing to talk about but other people's grades, apparently), the absence of one's name from the list is pretty telling of where they are academically.
Since it was my grandmother
that called me up to tell me I made the papers, it's pretty safe to assume
she's checked it other semesters and found I was no where to be found.
That means she knows basically what grades I make. And to make matters
worse, basically my entire family lives in this area so they can check the
paper for (the absence of) my name each semester. That ain't cool! A
change in school/newspaper policy is in order. |
